I think the whole idea of slavery comes into question here. Jim, at that point, is rightfully caught. By this time Jim is also the most sympathetic and likeable character in the book. Twain gets the reader to question the value system and integrity of most all the characters except Jim. THis, for the time period, was quite profound.
