In Huck Finn, Tom adds an edge to the plot. The character of Tom is always a charged with uncertainty and a sense of abandon. When we meet him in Huck Finn, the plot is heading towards the climax. Tom adds more uncertainty and a sense of reckless abandon to the saving of Jim. He also adds for some comedy relief.
