THere are quite a few moments of suspense in the chapters you refer to. Much of this has to do with the King and Duke. THey are both con-artists who, although provide comic relief, are rather nasty people. Their con regarding the family inheritance has the town in an uproar and almost gets Huck lynched. They create situations which really hurt people and they care nothing for the welfare of Huck or Jim.
