Huck is escaping Pap. Here we see strong imagery of the river at night. The sights and sounds of a pitch dark night stand out in the reader's mind. We also clearly see the silhouette of Huck's canoe and Pap, a drunken and stupid sod, paddle right by. The scene is still and tense.
