Huck is a rather counter-cultural character. His self-confidence happens gradually starting back with the first book Tom Sawyer. Huck seems to take things in both code and bad. By his own novel we see Huck becoming more self-aware. He seems to know that the right thing isn't Southern status-quo. He begins to see through crooks like the Duke and King. Huck developed a bond with Jim which transcends social expectations. Huck has the confidence in himself to know what is right and what is not.
