The Accidental Tourist

What is the setting, time period, and symbolism?

I can't remember if it's set somewhere like Maryland or Baltimore. I know it is mentioned at least once. For the time period, I'm pretty sure it's in the 1980s, but what's the exact year mentioned in the book? I don't have the slighest idea where to find these things. Also, is there any symbolism in the book?

The novel is set in Baltimore, Maryland in 1985.

One major symbol is that of Edward, Macon's Corgi (dog). The dog is representative of Macon's dead son, who loved the dog more than anything in the world.
