This is a coming-of-age story meaning that Junior is discovering relationships. I find the relationship between Grandma Spirit and Junior special. It is the only relationship not tainted by alcohol, guilt, regret, or really anything negative. They share a pure and loving bond together that provides Arnold a refuge from the harshness of the white and the Indian world.
