There are basically two settings in the book. They are both in Washington State. One is the Indian reservation of Wellpinit (near Spokane) and the other is the predominantly white school of Reardan. There is a constant dichotomy between the two places as Junior uses his humour to give us some witty comments on the socio-economic differences between the two. For much of the book, Junior's identity is torn between the two settings until he matures and begins to see his life in a bigger more wholistic way.
