The biggest change in Junior over the course of the novel is his acceptance of himself. Junior spends a lot of time trying to fit in, both on the reservation and at school. He is teased, bullied, and discriminated against, but he perseveres. Junior comes to understand that he doesn't have to be the stereotypical Indian everyone expects, nor, does he have to model himself after his white classmates. He also comes to realize that he isn't the only one suffering from the same feelings.
