Sherman Alexie understood both his subject matter and his audience better than many who criticize his references. The narrative reads much like a diary: a confessional of cultural and adolescent angst. Sexuality is a big part of being a teenager. Like most teen boys, Junior is navigating the rough and confusing waters of sex and the opposite gender. It is important that Junior's narrative remain authentic and free of contrived meaning. The sexuality must match the very raw authentic tone of Junior's cultural struggles.
