Chapter 20 - The Second Law of Thermodynamics - Problems - Discussion Questions - Page 676: Q20.7

Answer

Such a filter, also known as Maxwell’s Demon, would lower the temperature inside the house.

Work Step by Step

Equation 18.14 shows that the absolute temperature is proportional to the average translational kinetic energy for an ideal gas. As faster air molecules leave the house and are replaced by slower-moving molecules, the average translational kinetic energy would decrease, lowering the temperature inside the house. However, one statement of the second law of thermodynamics, found on page 657, states that it is impossible for any process to have as its sole result the transfer of heat from a colder to a hotter body. It is impossible to build this “passive air conditioner”.
