Chapter 20 - The Second Law of Thermodynamics - Problems - Discussion Questions - Page 676: Q20.23

Answer

Plants do not violate the second law of thermodynamics.

Work Step by Step

The ultimate source of energy is the Sun. Water, air, and trace minerals are randomized i.e., they have large entropy. Plants with organized structure is a less entropic system. Thus, more entropy converts to less entropy. According to the second law of thermodynamics, every process in a closed system increases its energy. The sun is the ultimate source of energy for plants. Without energy from the sun, it is not possible for plants to create a highly organized structure. Thus, plants do not make a closed system. Thus, they do not violate the second law of thermodynamics.
