Chapter 2 - Motion Along a Straight Line - Problems - Exercises - Page 63: 2.67

Answer

a) Total time taken by the car = 15.863 sec b) Total distance travelled by the car = 392.780 m c) Final speed of the car = 29.518 m/s

Work Step by Step

a) Total distance to be travelled by car to reach the given position say time t= Distance by which car's front is lagging from the truck rear + Distance travelled by the truck in that time + Length of the truck + Length of the car + Distance by which the car's rear is ahead of the Truck's front => $20t + \frac{1}{2}(0.6)t^{2} = 24 + 20t + 21 + 4.5 + 26$ This gives $t = \sqrt \frac{755}{3} = 15.863 sec$ b) Distance travelled by the car in that time = $75.5 + 20t = 75.5 + 20*15.863 = 392.780\ m$ c) Final speed of the car $= 20 + (0.6)t = 29.518\ m/s$
