Equation 18.14 shows that the absolute temperature is proportional to the average translational kinetic energy for an ideal monatomic gas. The ideal gas law, PV=nRT, shows us that if P is increased while the number of moles n stays the same (and presumably the volume V stays the same), the absolute temperature T rises. This increases the average translational kinetic energy of a gas atom. It IS possible to change both P and V while leaving the average translational kinetic energy unaffected, as long as the temperature stays the same.
