Chapter 17 - Temperature and Heat - Problems - Discussion Questions - Page 574: Q17.19

Answer

See explanation.

Work Step by Step

Metal is a much better thermal conductor than wood. A cold metal block quickly transfers heat out of your hand, and a hot metal block quickly transfers heat into your hand. This effect makes the metal blocks feel colder and hotter, respectively, than their wooden counterparts at the same temperature. If the metal and wood blocks were both at the temperature of your skin surface, then there would be no net heat transfer when you touched either block. They would both feel equally hot or cold.
