Chapter 17 - Temperature and Heat - Problems - Discussion Questions - Page 573: Q17.13

Answer

See explanation.

Work Step by Step

The aluminum has a low specific heat, as well as a low heat capacity because of its relatively small mass. It cools down to room temperature rapidly. The flat, thin foil has a high surface area to volume ratio. Because of its shape, it loses heat rapidly to its surroundings. For example, a small sphere of aluminum would stay hot longer than the same mass of aluminum in a foil shape.
