Chapter 21 - Electric Current and Direct-Current Circuits - Problems and Conceptual Exercises - Page 757: 59

Answer

(a) decrease (b) $I=0.12A$; clockwise

Work Step by Step

(a) We know that both the batteries in the circuit are in opposite direction, thus their net emf decreases and as a result the current will decrease. (b) According to Kirchhoff's Mesh rule $I(8.50\Omega)+I(6.22\Omega)+I(15.1\Omega)=15.0V-11.5V$ This simplifies to: $I=\frac{3.5V}{29.82\Omega}$ $I=0.12A$ The positive value of the current shows that the current flows in clockwise direction.
