Huygens’ principle (page 680) predicts the future position of wave fronts, which are points that form a wave crest. Both sound waves and water waves can be described in terms of wave crests, so Huygens’ principle applies to them.
For water waves, where each point vibrates up and down, the crest of a water wave is where water has reached its highest height above the plane of equilibrium (the level of the still water). A wave front is formed by connecting all of these local maxima. For example, for the waves generated by a rock thrown into a body of water, the wave crests are circles.
