Chapter 20 - Magnetism - Search and Learn - Page 589: 5

Answer

See answer. The forces are in the same direction.

Work Step by Step

See figure 20–76. The voltage difference creates a downward electric field that applies a force on charged particles. Positive ions are accelerated downward by the electric field. This motion is perpendicular to the magnetic field that points from left to right. They experience a magnetic force. The right-hand rule shows that positive ions experience a force out of the page, along the axis of the pipe. Negative ions are accelerated upward by the electric field. This motion is perpendicular to the magnetic field that points from left to right. They experience a magnetic force. The right-hand rule shows that negative ions also experience a force out of the page, along the axis of the pipe.
