Chapter 20 - Magnetism - Questions - Page 582: 12

Answer

a. No field b. Weak field into the page c. Medium field out of the page d. No field e. Strong field into the page

Work Step by Step

The field is zero where the particle does not curve. As the positively-charged particle moves to the right, if it is deflected upward into a more counterclockwise orbit, the right hand rule tells us the magnetic field must be into the page, as at points B and E. The tighter the bend, the stronger the magnetic field. As the positively-charged particle moves to the right, if it is deflected downward into a more clockwise orbit, the right hand rule tells us the magnetic field must be out of the page, as at point C.
