Look at Figure 11-33b. In the case of a rope with a free end, the reflected pulse is not inverted (compared to the incoming pulse). In the figure, we see that the incoming pulse displaces the rope end upward, transverse to the wave motion. As that end returns to equilibrium, this snapping motion generates a wave similar to the way that the incoming pulse was created.
