Chapter 32 - The Magnetic Field - Exercises and Problems - Page 956: 12

Answer

${\bf 0}\;\rm T$

Work Step by Step

Since the two wires from the junction point are identical, the current will be divided equally between both of them. See the figure below. Now we have one horizontal wire with a current of $I$ where its current is moving eastward. This means that the magnetic field at the given point is zero since the point is on the axis of the wire. And two vertical wires, which provide equal magnetic fields. The direction of the magnetic field of the upper wire, according to the right-hand rule, is into the page, while the direction of the magnetic field of the lower wire is out of the page. Hence, two equal magnetic fields with opposite directions. This gives us a net magnetic field of zero at the given point. Thus, $$B_{\rm net}=\color{red}{\bf 0}\;\rm T$$
