In their cruising spaceship, the occupants are in a state of free fall. They feel weightless and there is no up or down. They would feel the sensation of weight only if the ship accelerated. That sensation of weight could be be directed either forward or backward, depending on whether the ship were slowing down or speeding up, respectively.
