Your friend needs to further explain that a smaller volume of displaced saltwater is able to match the weight of the floating body. Therefore the body floats "higher" in saltwater. It would be even easier to float in a pool of mercury - a small fraction of your immersed body could displace a volume of mercury that weighs as much as you do.
