This is a hands-on demonstration. Try this with your friends, and be prepared to explain the physics of the demonstration to them. The pepper grains float because of surface tension, much like the paper clip in Figure 13.29. Soapy water has less surface tension than fresh water (page 258), so after the soap is added, the grains sink.
