Chapter 2 - Structure and Properties of Organic Molecules - Problems - Page 65: Problem 2-14 b

Answer

2) The dipole moment of all the bonds contributes to the molecular dipole moment. The molecular dipole moment is towards fluorine (shown in pink). 3) The companies has a large molecular dipole moment.

Work Step by Step

1) The lewis structure is drawn with carbon in the center and H and F attached to it. 2) Between carbon and hydrogen, carbon is more electronegative than H. So, the dipole moment is towards carbon. In the bond between carbon and fluorine, the dipole moment is towards fluorine. Thus, the molecular dipole moment is towards fluorine (shown in pink). 3) The dipole moment of the compound is large.
