Chapter 11 - Reactions of Alcohols - Problems - Page 472: Problem 11-2 c

Answer

The cyclopentylmethanol reaction with PCC yields an aldehyde. while the reaction with Chromic acid yields Carboxylic acid as an end product.

Work Step by Step

The reaction of the cyclopentylmethanol with PCC (pyridinium chlorochromate) yields aldehyde because it is a limited oxidation agent of primary alcohols to aldehydes, which gives excellent yields of aldehydes. While the reaction with chromic acid yields an aldehyde then further oxidation occurs to yield carboxylic acid as the chromic acid strong oxidizing agent.
