1) Draw the structure, by using single bonds, in the sequence shown in the formula. 2) Count the number of valence electrons involved in the bonding, which is 32. There should be 50. Make a one more bond between C and O, and C and C. Now there are 38 e. 3) Since O,C, H, have already made the max bonds possible, place the remaining electrons as lone pairs, two on each O. 4) Now count the valence electrons, it should be 50e.
