1) Draw the structure in the sequence shown in the formula. 2) Count the number of valence electrons involved in the bonding, which is 12. There should be 1+1+1+4+5+4+6=22e. Make a one more bond between N and C, and N and O. Now there are 14 e. 3) Since O,C, H have already made the max bonds possible, place the remaining electrons as lone pairs, two on O and one on N. 4) Now count the valence electrons, it should be 22e.
