Chapter 6 - Chemical Composition - Exercises - Problems - Page 200: 81

Answer

a) $H_{3}PO_{4}$ is Phosphoric acid. b) $HBr$ is the formula for hydrobromic acid. c) $H_{2}SO_{3}$ is the formula for sulfurous acid.

Work Step by Step

a) For an acid with a poly-atomic ion, the suffix “-ate” from the ion is replaced with “-ic.” Therefore, phosphoric acid would be composed of the phosphate ion $(PO_{4}^{3-})$ b) Acids with a prefix of "hydro" are composed of the H+ cation and the negative anion which is in the name of the acid. Therefore, hydrobromic acid is made up of H+ and Br-. c) "ous" acids are made up from poly-atomic ions that have one fewer oxygen atom. So in this case the acid is made from the sulfite ion $(SO_{3}^2-)$
