Here, U-238 (atomic number 92) is converted into U-239 after bombardment by neutron which is shown in the first nuclear equation above. Then U-239 undergoes two sequential beta decay to form Pu-239 (atomic number 94). After first beta decay, U-239 is converted into Np-239 (atomic number 93). This is formed because when a beta particle is emitted from a nucleus the atomic number is increased by 1 unit. This can be represented in the form of nuclear equation by writing the elements and beta particle in symbolic form. After conversion of Np-239, another beta decay occurs and the new element will have atomic number 94. The new element will be Pu-239 (atomic number 94).
