Chapter 1 - The Chemical World - Exercises - Questions - Page 10: 8

Answer

Chemists employ scientific methods that include observations, hypothesis, theories and experiments to explore new phenomenon. In this chapter scientific method used by Levoiser to formulate his thoery was explained. He measured the mass of substrates before start of the reaction and the mass of the products at the end of the reaction and formulated the thoery of conservation of mass which states: "mass can not be created or destroyed. It can only change its form from one to another."

Work Step by Step

Antoine Lavoisier calculated property of mass of substance while combustion. Initially he measured the mass of object before andafter combustion. And he observed that there is no change in the mass becuase of combustion. This led him to formulate a hypothesis called the "law of conservation of mass," which declares that matter is neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction.
