Chapter 4 - Reactions in Aqueous Solution - Exercises: 4.29

Answer

(d) more than one, but not all, of the reactions described in answers a - c could occur.

Work Step by Step

Use Table 4.1 on Page 129 as a reference. We can predict whether a precipitate will form or not by seeing if the product is soluble in water. (a) : True $BaSO_4 $ will precipitate because the $Ba^{2+}$ and $SO_4^{2-}$ compound is insoluble in water. (b): True $AgCl$ will precipitate because the $Ag^+$ and $Cl^-$ compound is insoluble in water. (c): False $Ag_2SO_4$ will not precipitate because the $Ag^+$ and $SO_4^{2-}$ compound is soluble in water. Therefore since a, b are true and c is false, d is the the correct answer.
