Affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen is decreased by binding with any of the following: hydrogen ions, carbon dioxide and 2,3-BPG. (a) Decrease in pH increases hydrogen ion and so affinity is decreased. (b) Decrease in carbon dioxide increases affinity. (c) Increase in BPG decreases affinity. (d) CO binds to Hb more tightly so it decreases the affinity for oxygen.
