Chapter 26 - RNA Metabolism - Problems - Page 1099: 3

Answer

5' AAUAAA is a signal for cleavage and polyadenylation. After RNA Pol II finishes transcribing this sequence, an endonuclease cleaves the transcript to allow polyadenylase to to add adenosine residues to the 3' end to form the Poly A tail. A mutation would inhibit this process, leaving the transcript unstable and decreasing the likelihood of synthesizing any protein.
