Chapter 19 - Sexual Reproduction and the Power of Genetics - Questions - Page 679: Question 19-7 A

Answer

True, the sperm and egg of animals are haploid.

Work Step by Step

The term haploid means that the cell or genome has only one set of chromosomes, whereas diploid means that there are two sets. The egg and sperm of animals are germ (or sex) cells. These cells are haploid, as they carry only one set of chromosomes. The germ cells only carry one set of chromosomes because they are formed by meiosis. A parent germ cell contains one set of paternal and maternal chromosomes, or homologs, making it haploid. However, during meiosis, the homologs duplicate, pair, and crossover using the meiotic spindle to take and link the corresponding homologs. The resulting daughter cells are haploid, as they contain four different variations of the paternal and maternal homologs.
