Chapter 1 - Cells: The Fundamental Units of Life - Questions - Page 38: Question 1-16

Answer

This statement is accurate, given the function and structure of cells in our bodies as well as how they are formed.

Work Step by Step

For starters, living cells descend from nonliving cells, however, they can grow and replicate. This is already an example of the statement as the cells don't just spawn from nothing. They use energy to function and build the structures they do, and nothing is simply new. Rather, everything must be made by expending energy to do so. The cells themselves don't simply come to be, and trying to just throw one together would be generally useless, as the cells are evolutionary products made by other cells. Every part of the cell was made from another cell, costing more energy. This also means that the mother cell will always pass down the chemical constitutes to the daughter cells, reinforcing that they are made very specifically.
