Chapter 6 - 6.2 - Concept Check: 1

The nucleus has pores to allow for molecules needed for protein synthesis to move into and out of the organelle. The mitochondrion has folds called cristae to maximize surface area to allow for greater ATP production in aerobic respiration. The rough endoplasmic reticulum has ribosomes attached. This is important for when the cell needs to produce proteins at the site of the ribosome that may need to be transported outside of the cell or elsewhere within the cell.

Work Step by Step

The theme of "shape enhances function" can be seen throughout all of Biology but specifically on a molecular level. Try to consider what the function of a molecule, organelle, cell is and then think about its shape. How does that shape help it carry out its job?
