Two examples of things which show both the commonality and the variety of individual kinds of gymnosperms: 1) Cones vary widely, though they all produce seeds, from those containing dry scales like pines to those which have soft, fruit-like structure such as junipers; 2) Leaves of gymnosperms all perform photosynthesis and are megaphylls but range from the scales of larch and pine to the fan-like blades of ginkgoes.
