Chapter 12 - 12.2 - Concept Check: 2

The main difference is that animal cells form a cleavage furrow and plant cells grow a new cell wall.

Work Step by Step

Cytokinesis is the last step of mitosis and is the actual split between the daughter cells. In animal cells a cleavage furrow first appears in the middle, near the old metaphase plate. The cleavage furrow deepens until the parent cell is divided into two daughter cells. In plant cells, instead of a cleavage furrow there is a cell plate. During telophase, vesicles move to the middle of the parent cell to form cell plates. The cell plates grow via vesicles sending materials until they all connect and form one cell wall.
