Not all of the organic nutrients made by producers is used by consumers. A portion of the organic substances made by producers must be used for the producer's consumption. Consumers eliminate some of the organic nutrients they consume in their solid wastes while nitrogenous wastes are passed out of their bodies as urine. Finally, a large part of the energy that is used in metabolic processes is released in the form of heat energy.
