Chapter 20 - Viruses, Bacteria, and Archaea - Engage - Thinking Scientifically - Page 372: 3

Answer

A virus cell will attach to a host cell based on the compatibility of the surface protein of both cells. A hole is created in the host cell membrane and DNA or RNA is injected. After penetration, the viral genome overrides the host cell's genome, forcing it to replicate its own genetic material. Newly generated DNA or RNA will load into viral capsules as they form from viral particles that are attached together. Enzymes are released to lyse the host cell as many new virus cells are released.
