Chapter 2 - Basic Chemistry - Assess - Page 34: 9

Answer

Option e all of the above is the correct choice.

Work Step by Step

Option a: Due to its shape and polarity, water molecule exhibits hydrogen bonding. Hydrogen bonding is an inter-molecular force, in which hydrogen atom of one water molecule is attracted by an oxygen atom of another water molecule. Due to hydrogen bonding, the solubility of the solution increases. In aqueous solutions, the water molecules form a hydrogen bond with the solutes that contain hydrogen, oxygen or nitrogen. Living beings contain water as a major cellular component. Water has high heat capacity. It regulates our body temperature and because of this property of water, we are able to tolerate summers and winters. Latent heat of water is 540 calories, which is very high compared to any other solvent. This high value is due to the extensive hydrogen bonding between water molecules. When the body temperature increases, sweat is secreted. Evaporation of water in sweat dissipates the heat away, and this stabilizes the body temperature. So, the option a is correct. Option b: Due to cohesive and adhesive nature of the water, water circulates against gravity in plants. So, the option (b) is correct. Option c: Water has the ability of forming hydrogen bonding with the solute particles, and it acts as solvent for most of solutes. So the option c is correct. Option d: Water condenses with decrease in temperatures. However, below 4 degree Celsius water expands on further decrease in temperature. This is called anomalous expansion of water. The density of ice is less than density of water. Due to this, ice floats on water.Hence, option d is correct. Since all of the given options are true, the correct answer is option (e) all of the above are correct.
