Improved care for larger and smaller babies should end or reduce selection for intermediate birth weights. The curve would flatten as more babies at the extremes of the distribution survived.

Improved care would eliminate the stabilizing selection, or at least reduce it, for intermediate birth weight. This would, in turn, cause the curve to flatten since the intermediate peak is caused by that stabilizing selection.
