Single celled prokaryotic Archaea are known to withstand extreme conditions. Phospholipids are the basis for cell membranes, and contain a non polar head and a polar tail made of fatty acids. Phospholipids in archaea are different than those in other cells because they have tails made of isoprenoid, a different type of lipid.
