Chapter 50 - Behavioral Ecology - Review - Case Study - Page 1069: 16

Answer

The use of sonar radiation has benefits for the military, but it also harms the whales at the same time. The whales tend to move away from the source of sound emitted by the sonars and rush toward the beach. Thus, beach strandings occur with the resultant death of whales due to dehydration (loss of water), collapsing under their own weight, or drowning of when high tide covers the blowhole of whale

Work Step by Step

Military uses sonars to send and receive signals and, thus, in this way they keep a watch over the sea and oceans against foreign or militant attack. The military off-shore operations interfere with their communication. The researchers found that the whales increase their speed and change directions when they come in contact with the sound and rush toward beach. This problem can be solved by understanding the true nature of their migratory and nesting patterns. The military can restrict the use of sonar devices far away from the nesting and breeding grounds of the whales. During the migratory period of the whales, the sonars can be used freely. Thus, in this way, both the military and the whales can be benefitted.
