The annulus fibrosis, is composed mostly of fibrocartilage, is more of the external portion and contains the nucleus pulposus. The nucleus is the semifluid substance enclosed by the annulus. The annulus provides the necessary strength and durability for the disk. The nucleus provides resilience. Disc herniation involves protrusion of the nucleus pulposus through the annulus.
