Fluids in the body can be divided into extracellular fluid and intracellular fluid. Extracellular fluid is the fluid present outside the cells. It is divided into plasma and interstitial fluid. Both are abundant in chloride, sodium and bicarbonate ions but they are different in such a way that plasma has more proteins compared to interstitial fluid. Intracellular fluids have abundant protein anions and potassium, magnesium and phosphate ions (page 991 to 993).
