Ketones or ketone bodies are fatty acid metabolites. In healthy people, a negligible amount is present in the urine. In conditions where carbohydrates cannot be used as an energy source or is unavailable like diabetes mellitus and starvation , fat becomes the major energy supplier so fatty acid metabolism increases. It leads to increased amount of ketones in urine. This is also known as ketonuria.
