When arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide increases, it causes more carbon dioxide to diffuse from blood to brain. In brain, it forms carbonic acid where it dissociates freeing the hydrogen ions. Increase in hydrogen ions leads to activation of central chemoreceptors in brain stem that increases the rate and depth of breathing
